Each month we shout about one of our incredible partners. For January, we checked in with the biggest mobile gaming site in the world, Pocket Tactics.

Mobile gaming has ballooned into a behemoth industry worth over 90 billion dollars worldwide. We’ve seen massive franchises ported over to handheld consoles and remade in app form, and have witnessed mobile-only games dominate the gaming industry.

Pocket Tactics, a Network N site, has worked over the years to create an expansive database full of game guides, reviews, and breaking news within the mobile gaming world. As the biggest mobile gaming site in the world, it’s hard work getting to the top (and staying there). We sat down with the site editor, Ruby Spiers-Unwin, to discuss their stronghold on the mobile gaming market.

What makes Pocket Tactics unique among other sites in the market?

“Our small but mighty team of staff is dedicated to ensuring all of our content is up-to-date and as accurate as possible so that our audience doesn’t need to look anywhere else. We update our huge library of guides weekly and go out of our way to make sure our tier lists have the best characters, our code lists aren’t expired, and our news pieces are accurate and informative.

“I feel like a lot of the little things can sometimes be overlooked and hinder user experience. We want Pocket Tactics to be a resource for all things portable, but with our own personal flair and humor, that we would go out of our way to use ourselves outside of work.”

How has your audience impacted your experience as a site owner/gamer?

“Without our loyal readers, we couldn’t write about the things we love. The mobile game-enjoyer audience is so vast. There are so many different game genres available, it has really broadened our horizons about what we can cover and still bring in a vast demographic of people to the site.

“As the site owner, I have learned to see value in the most casual of match-three games to some intense FPS titles, which translates into how I spend my time outside of work as well. Before joining Pocket Tactics I would definitely have considered myself a console gamer, but I now spend the majority of my time trying out the range of games on Apple Arcade and playing Honkai Star Rail.”

What’s one of your favorite aspects of managing your website?

“Pocket Tactics has an absolutely lovely, hardworking team, who are willing to put their hearts and souls into making sure the site thrives. I love coming in every morning and being able to work together to find new avenues of traffic with everyone and hear their insights into the latest trends.

“If I had to use one word to describe us, it’s ‘relentless’. Pocket Tactics is our passion and we love to see traffic spikes and our hard work come to fruition.”

What are you most proud of in regards to your website?

“I’m most proud of the size we’ve managed to grow to in a relatively short amount of time. I started on Pocket Tactics towards the end of 2020 and at that time we were hitting about 650k users a month, we now reach around 11 million people each month, with a small but hard-working team.

“I put this entirely down to the team’s relentless nature that I mentioned above, and have an immense amount of respect for them as they treat the site with as much love and care as I do.”

Do you have any advice for website owners who are just starting out?

“It’s going to be hard work growing your audience. In between writing what you’re passionate about, you do need to delve into a range of games you may not be eager to play in your downtime. Whatever topic you choose to create a website on, there are going to be many avenues you need to venture down that you may not have thought about before.

“Using gaming as an example, there are hundreds of games out there, so starting a website on your own or with a small team, it’s only natural that you won’t be interested in all of them. If you can balance your time on the important IPs that bring in the bulk of traffic and things you love, it makes each day much more enjoyable – traffic is important, but so is your sanity.”
