Welcome to our new Employee Spotlight series! Each month, we’ll showcase the amazing people that make up Publisher Collective and give everyone a sneak peek into what makes us, well...us.

This month, we caught up with Shane Agnew, an Account Director at Publisher Collective who manages our Supply partnerships. Read on to learn more about Shane’s role, his journey to joining Publisher Collective, and who he’d love to trade jobs with for a day.

1. Starting with your role, what does a typical day look like for you here?

My role boils down to this - Relationship Building and Representation: The sales-oriented nature of my job consists of building relationships with SSPs, DSPs & 3P vendors, enhancing collaboration, growth and revenue opportunities as well as Influencing various marketplace deals for the business. I do it every day!

2. What’s your favourite part of your role and why?

I enjoy evangelising about the inventory. A common misconception is that programmatic is just transactional. But relationship building is a vital differentiator in a very crowded marketplace.

3. How has your career path evolved? Was this industry always the goal or has it been a journey?

A bit of a journey. I spent 10 years with Sky Media working with  all of the options they had to offer, from linear TV, out-of-home TV through to sponsorship and online. But programmatic advertising fascinated me so I am happy I chose to follow that path.

4. Who or what inspires you professionally, or in general?

Tough question but I would say I find inspiration in professional sports teams. I love sports whether it be football, F1, Rugby Union - all of them! I am fascinated on how team success is down to meticulous planning and execution - most recently the European Ryder Cup team!

5. Is there a skill, habit, or mindset that’s helped you succeed in your role?

As mentioned above, relationships in this industry are key. Relationships vs transactions...relationships win out every time. Also It’s a relatively small ecosystem so I always keep in mind “what goes around, comes around".

6. What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone considering a career in your field?

Don’t be overawed by the constant flow of jargon, acronyms and general discourse. Meet it head on. Just ask someone & research it…don’t keep it to yourself in fear of being “exposed”. The phraseology changes on a daily basis!

7. If you could describe your team in three words, what would they be?

  • Collaborative
  • Trustworthy
  • Adaptable

8. If you could trade jobs with anyone for a day, who would it be and why?

Another tough question. A total fantasy pick would be Team Principal at an F1 team. All encompassing, calling the shots in a sport I love and highly rewarding (if it goes well!)....and you get to go to all of the races!

9. What personal accomplishment are you most proud of?

Maybe a bit corny but, I’m going to go for my 2 daughters. We have a 12 year old who is growing up WAY too quickly for my liking and a nine year old who is full of energy from 6.30am through to bedtime. They work very hard at school and we are very proud of them.

10. Do you have any pets? If you don’t have any, what would your perfect weekend look like?

I have a cat. Her name is Trulli. She has designated me as chief  food provider in my household and I fulfill that role to her satisfaction.
