NPI Profile is a free online directory that makes it easy to find detailed information about healthcare providers across the United States who are registered with the National Provider Identifier (NPI) system.

This month, we sat down with the site’s creator to discuss the story behind NPI Profile, the challenges and wins that shaped its growth, and what it takes to build a trusted, data-driven resource in the healthcare space. From overcoming technical growing pains to turning a simple directory into a full-fledged knowledge hub, they share honest insights into their journey and what’s next for the platform.

1. What inspired you to start your site, and what was the first big “win” that made you feel like you were onto something?

"Our mission was born out of a desire to simplify the complex. We saw a need to streamline access to NPI (National Provider Identifier) information and, more importantly, enrich that data with meaningful context that was not available elsewhere. We wanted to move beyond just a directory and create a comprehensive knowledge hub.

Our first big 'win' was not a metric or a revenue goal. It was the feedback. We began seeing a surge of recurring users who told us they finally found exactly what they were looking for, plus additional insights they could not find on similar sites. Seeing that immediate, positive response from people who genuinely found our tools useful was the moment we knew we were onto something special."

2. Running a site can be a wild ride, what's one unexpected challenge you've faced, and how did you overcome it?

"Growth is exciting, but it brings its own set of hurdles. As our traffic scaled, we hit several technical walls that forced our team to rethink our infrastructure. However, the biggest challenge was learning to navigate the ebbs and flows of the web. When traffic would dip, we had to resist the urge to panic and instead pivot by using those moments to analyze user behavior and make the site even more accessible and intuitive for our audience.

The advertising market is also notoriously volatile. We navigated several alternatives before finding the right fit with the team at Publisher Collective. Having a partner who provides consistent feedback and sets realistic expectations has been a game-changer in turning the challenge of monetization into a streamlined and reliable process for us."

3. What’s your favorite part of the day-to-day work you do on your site, and what’s something people might not realize goes into it?

"There is an incredible amount of 'invisible' work that happens behind the scenes every day. People might not realize that we update the site every single week to ensure the data is fresh and accurate. Our favorite part of the job is the engineering work we’ve put into those updates. We managed to deploy massive data refreshes without ever interrupting the user experience. Keeping the site 100% accessible while the gears are turning in the background is a challenge we find deeply rewarding."

4. What advice would you give to someone thinking about launching their own site today?

"An idea is just a starting point. It is the consistency and patience that actually bring it to life. We often tell people that hard work makes it easier to 'stumble' into lucky moments. You have to be prepared to put in the hours when no one is watching so that you are ready when the opportunity finally arrives. Do not chase overnight success. Chase a better user experience, and the rest will follow."

5. What’s next for NPI Profile?

"We are looking toward the horizon. Our goal is to expand our knowledge graph to cover even more aspects of healthcare provider data in the United States. We believe that the more transparent and accessible information is, the better the outcomes for the healthcare consumer. We want NPI Profile to be the gold standard for informed healthcare choices."

6. How has working with Publisher Collective helped your site grow or evolve?

"Working with Publisher Collective has been a seamless experience from day one. From the initial technical setup to the day-to-day optimization, the team has been incredibly responsive. As our site evolves, they have been right there with us by helping us navigate the growth and ensuring our monetization strategy scales alongside our traffic."

7. Is there anything we’ve done in particular that you’ve loved?

"We really value the 'look ahead' insights. Ad tech is a field that never sits still, and having a partner that provides a clear outlook on market trends allows our team to stay proactive rather than reactive. That foresight is invaluable for our long-term planning."
